It’s hard to choose what has caught my attention the most during this tumultuous election cycle, but I have to say that it’s definitely the way our nation views women. It’s apparent in the way Hillary Clinton is criticized and it’s apparent in the way Donald Trump talks about women. It’s incredible that there has been so much progress made for the quality of life of our country’s women in the last century, yet there’s still the threat of it being reversed in the snap of a finger. It’s amazing that it doesn’t stop at reproductive rights for women, which is the specific issue my drawing focuses on, but extends into the normalization of sexually assaulting women. I sincerely hope that my contribution sparks conversation about not just reproductive rights for women, but women’s rights as a whole. We fight for the right to feel safe talking to men we don’t know without worrying about becoming a statistic, the right to be viewed as an equal in the workplace, the right to be able to make all decisions regarding our health, the right exist as ourselves and not in relation to the men in our lives. I hope my contribution creates pride in women proud and further support among men.

Because of the bipartisan nature of our system I think the largest thing missing in American politics is empathy. Empathy and understanding can only come through conversations and shared experiences. So, how do those conversations start? With this project we are encouraging this vessel to be a means of self expression. We know that this project will provide an opportunity to explain what these special images are and provide a platform for constructive discourse.

I think we are living in a terrifying time. I was told to trust the system. Unfortunately, I am incredibly impatient, and the way the system was set up to function was in a painfully slow manner. So, here we are in 2016 in a pivotal time for human rights and our relationship to the rest of the world and the environment. I think having a political voice goes beyond your involvement at the polls. Outside of voting, the political system is ultimately shaped by a cultural understanding of what is good for the future of our country.
