No candidate for President of the United States has inspired me as much as Bernie Sanders. This extraordinary man was willing to tell the truth about the state of our country and provide a voice for the lower and middle classes whose needs have been largely forgotten by both the Democratic and Republican Parties.

One of the most surprising moments in Bernie’s campaign was when a finch landed on the senator’s podium during a rally in Portland. In that moment the bird seemed to represent the invisible, underrepresented majority of the American people. When Bernie suspended his campaign and “dropped the microphone” he left many of us with an even stronger desire for truth and change, fueled by the idea that the revolution would not be led by him, but by us.

This is the beginning of the story behind my drawing.

My mother was the most compassionate person I’ve ever known. Because of her, growing up in our house, it was only natural that you treated people how you wanted to be treated. She taught me that every living thing deserves respect and peace no matter the difference between race, sexual preferences, gender, disabilities, religions, and even how we treat the planet. This is how I live my life because it makes the most sense to me. What makes absolutely no sense to me, however, is that we have a candidate for presidency who disrespects all aspects of life and is leading a campaign based on hatred. This election means the difference between getting knocked back down into a world where people are oppressed for having the wrong skin color or the wrong god or standing up for what’s right and moving forward to ensure equality for all without fear of choosing a life partner or which bathroom to use, to say the least.
